Elite education programme in jeopardy

A conflict between the European Union's rules and Denmark's education laws has put the prestigious Erasmus Mundus programme in jeopardy at Danish universities.

The Science Ministry has asserted that any requirement for payment from a Danish student is against Danish law, which states that education must be free to the country's citizens. The EU, however, requires that all students participating in the Erasmus Mundus programme - foreign or otherwise - must be allowed to do so under the same conditions.

Nina Smith, vice-rector at Aarhus University, said that to uphold both the ministry's and the EU's conditions would mean the school's opting out of Erasmus Mundus. Helge Sander, the science minister, acknowledged the difficulties of the conflict and indicated the ministry is currently working on a solution 'partly for the here and now but also for the long-term'.
