Biofuel: a cheaper alternative to coal

Two of Denmark's largest coal consumers, Dong Energy and Vattenfall, are now seriously considering speeding up the process of replacing fossil fuels with biofuel to produce 'green' electricity.

While the current situation means that energy companies are considering the biofuel alternative sooner than expected, high expenses related to switching may be a deterrent. Substantial investments are needed to rebuild the traditional coal-powered plants.

“We're analysing the situation carefully. Coal is expensive at the moment, but if subsidies are also granted for switching to biofuel, then we must re-evaluate,” said Leif Vinum, Dong Energy's planning executive.
