Objective
The objective of this visit is to help participants to review and revise their knowledge transfer procedures by closely examining the processes, procedures and tools used by Warwick Ventures in protecting and commercialising the university IP. This will be achieved by participant discussions (with some short presentations) in meetings and discussions with senior personnel at WV and the University including the Director, Business Managers, academics working with WV and spin-off companies located at the University of Warwick Science Park. There will also be opportunities to attend regional investor meetings.
Timetable
Day 1 The visit begins with an introduction to Warwick Ventures, its role within the university and an outline of its range of activities and responsibilities, its structures and how it is managed. This will be followed by an in depth discussion on the use of the important tool, the Commercial Opportunity Appraisal Process (COAP) and some practical examples of the use of this tool. The day will conclude with an examination of the patenting and licensing policies and how licensing deals are identified and negotiated.
Day 2 This will focus on the creation of spin-off companies, what characteristics in an opportunity needs to be present, the university policy and procedures that facilitate the creation of such companies, and the writing of business plans. The afternoon will be spent at a Connect Midlands event where early stage companies give presentations to potential investors.
Day 3 Visit to the University Science Park and meet with founders of university spin-off companies followed by discussions with senior WV personnel on raising finance and investment for spin-offs. The day will conclude with discussions and meetings with academics working with WV to identify their hopes and expectations.
Day 4 Discussions and practical examples of how WV and the University of Warwick support and encourage academic entrepreneurship. This includes the Connect InvoRed programme, Enterprise Fellowship Scheme, Spinner etc. the programme will end with final conclusions on technology transfer activities, what works and what does not.
