ProTon Europe is in the process of establishing Special Interest Groups. One of the Special Interest Groups deals with the Patent policy. As you know, the European Commission has been a long time in the process of making new proposals on the matter. The role of the Vice President for Innovation is to be the focal point for UCD’s commitment to knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship and external partnerships. Professor Keane will work with NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre which is responsible for the commercialisation of intellectual property arising from UCD research programmes.

Articles Swedish Research and Innovation Bill 2009-2012
Every electoral period, the Swedish Government presents a research bill, setting the framework for central government-funded research for the coming four years. This year’s bill covers the period 2009-2012 and includes an increase in funding for research and innovation. Up to 2012, the public funding of R&D will be increased by SEK 5 billion (approx £400 million). The initiative includes for example the removal of the “higher education VAT” (Previously 8%, and now 0%) and funding for so called strategic areas that have been deemed strategically important to Swedish society and the business sector. In 2008-09 all public sector allocations for R&D total SEK 25.6 billion.
