Professor Mark Keane Appointed Vice President for Innovation at University College Dublin

Dublin, Monday, 15 October 2007: Professor Mark Keane has been appointed Vice President for Innovation at University College Dublin. The role of the Vice President for Innovation is to be the focal point for UCD’s commitment to knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship and external partnerships. Professor Keane will work with NovaUCD, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre which is responsible for the commercialisation of intellectual property arising from UCD research programmes.


Professor Mark Keane, a UCD Psychology graduate has been Chair of Computer Science at UCD since 1998. During 2004-2007 Professor Keane was seconded to Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), where he was Director of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and interim Director General. He played a key role in implementing SFI’s €700 million research investment in ICT and Biotechnology, and in advising the government during the planning of the €3.7 billion Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Professor Keane has written over 130 refereed publications including 20 books. He is co-author of Cognitive Psychology: A Student’s Handbook, one of the most widely-used textbooks in Cognitive Science, which has sold over 500,000 copies world-wide and has been translated into five languages.
